At the foot of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, is Spain’s oldest golf course, the Club de Golf Corta Atalaya. It dates back to the late 19th century (1914) when the English technicians working for the Río Tinto Mining Company founded it under the name of the North Lode Golf Club. In 1990 the new Atalaya golf course was built next to the village of Minas de Rio Tinto; the original was founded in the 19th century within the Rio Tinto copper mine.
In 1992 the course was relocated to replanted former mine workings from which the view of the opencast mine that gives the course its name can be seen. Nearby is the picturesque “Barrio Inglés” (English quarter), residential area with its Victorian architecture, something that is well worth a visit. One of the course’s greatest attractions are the breathtaking views of the opencast mine with its spectacular display of reds, coppers and iron oxide.
