Hora (The Village) and Ormos (Gialos)
Hora more known by its popular name The Village, is the capital of the island, located on the hill above the port of Ormos (Gialos). Ormos (Gialos) the second most populated area of the island, lots of accommodation behind a nice bay with a sandy beach. The port-harbour is full of life especially when the boats and ferries dock.
Hora (The Village) and Ormos (Gialos) both have restaurants, tavernas, bars, live music, and Discos.
There are two picturesque paved squares in Hora (The Village) known as piazzes, on one of them stands The Byzantine church of the Panayia Gremniotissa with its blue dorms is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. There are numerous windmills at Chora, many of them are being restored by the Municipality of Ios. Above the windmills, you will find the Odysseas Elytis Theatre named in honor of the Nobel Prize-winning poet. (The song Ena to Helidoni is composed by Mikis Theodorakis, one of the most important Greek Composers and the lyrics are written by Odysseas Elytis, one of the two Greek Poets that have won a Nobel Prize of Literature) Ena to Helidoni performed here by Grigoris Bithikotsis, lyrics by Odysseas Elytis and the composer is Mikis Theodorakis.
Allegedly Ios was one of the seven cities that claim to be the birthplace of the great poet. However, as it has been stated later, it was most likely the birthplace of the poet’s mother. According to another source dating sometimes from the 2nd century, AD. Homer’s ship was caught in a bad storm on the way to Athens. Homer’s battle with the waves had exhausted him so much that he died here on Ios, in fact, Homers Tomb, (looking more like some unorganised piles of stones) can be visited on Ios. Nearby there are some nice small beaches like Plakoto beach.
Ios a party Island
Certainly, during a two-three month period in the high season, Ios has a reputation as a party island with bars, discos, and parties, some planned others more spur of the moment affairs lasting into the early hours, (Breakfast served between 10:00 – 16:00 advertised at one bar). Sure, this is one of the top islands in the Cyclades that attract those who are young (great mix of international visitors) and those who feel young (like me) who come here for fun in the sun.
Beaches plenty of good ones
Gialos bay formed the sandy beach, close to the Ormos (Gialos) port. Very popular with its large, family friendly facilities, and a good choice of water sport activities.
The most famous beach is the Mylopotas beach, slightly horseshoe-shaped and over 1 km long. Lots of water sports facilities including scuba diving. there are plenty of bars, tavernas discos, and clubs. Famous beach party atmosphere. This is where the party starts. Easy to get there, take the local bus from Ormos (Gialos) port and-or the Village, often crowded in the summer. Departing every 15 minutes. Short bus ride. Taxis are available getting around Chora, Mylopotas Ormos/Gialos port, with a fixed charge. Boat trips from Ormos/Gialos to several other beaches on the island.
For your daily activities like water sports, two good links on Mylopotas Beach. Both include book online. Meltemi and Mylopotas water sport.

In the south of the island, several beaches. Tris Klisies is a beautiful beach on the southern part of Ios, on the road to Manganari. About 15 minutes walk on a small path after you leave your transport. Sandy and deep blue waters.
Manganari with its smallish sandy bays and shallow water is popular with a more relaxed atmosphere compared with Gialos and Mylopotas. Organised, family friendly. Water sport available, especially during high season. Christos bar-taverna on the beach is still very popular. Manganari is located 19 km southeast of The Village.
Agia Theodoti beach is another great sandy beach. Relaxed atmosphere, family friendly and partly organised. Water sport available especially during high season. Agia Theodoti located about 9 km east of The Village.
Plakoto beach located around 14 km north of The Village. It’s a good beach to visit if you plan to go to Homers Tomb. Coarse sandy beach, crystal clear water. None organised and no facilities there, it is important to take supplies with you. Don’t forget to bring water!
