Maroma a mountain to climb
Several routes to the Maroma top. The two most popular routes in Axarquia are from the village of Canillas de Aceituna and Alcaucin. Alcaucin is allegedly the shortest and “easiest” of the routes. The most challenged one is from Canillas de Aceituna and takes around 7 hours to complete.
Llanadas de Sedella, this is where we started our adventure. Some reports describe this as the easiest and shortest walking route taking 5-6 hours to cover about 6 miles if you know the route. Llanadas de Sedella plateau offer with clear blue sky stunning views to Africa one side and inland to Granada and the Sierra Nevada’s on the other side.
Then we started to climb along a section of loose rock and low scrub – we find that the path was not well marked but according to our experience “guide” as long as you head along the ridge you will be fine.
After a few hours walk our “guide” look less and less certain that we were on the right walking route, however, we continue to head up and eventually we hit the right path again. Due to the height, we learned rather quickly that clear and good visibility is crucial as there are some dangerous drops along the route.
The clouds get closer and it was decided that we should return down. I must admit that I was rather whacked now after over 4 hours walk. I believe at this point we had another hour’s walk to the top. On the way down I’m sure we got lost again. At one stage there was a section when the ridge walk was only a few meters wide, with vertical slopes dropping off but the views from this section were in my experience the most dramatic of the whole walk.
Eventually, after well over 6 hours walk we returned to Llanadas de Sedella plateau. Despite our failure to reach the Maroma top this time and that we get “lost” a few times it was a great and memorable day.
at an altitude of 2069 m, is the highest peak of the Sierra de Tejeda, The summit is located in the region of Axarquía on the border between the provinces of Granada and Málaga. The name La Maroma (“The Rope”) comes from a rope used to descend to an ancient ice house located close to the summit.
