is the largest of The Cyclades Islands and the 10th largest in Greece. Its green landscape is like a rich garden with vineyards, citrus orchards, olive groves, cattle breeding and is also known for its potatoes. Naxos Island is a very popular destination, with a commercial port and airport.
Start with a pleasant stroll along the harbour area watching the fishermen at work, enjoying a cold drink sitting on one of the many outside cafes, restaurants, and tavernas. Above the harbour, the old town, narrow streets, shops, boutiques, tavernas, bars, and restaurants. Kastro the oldest quarter. Kastro constructed by the Venetians. Naxos town’s landmark, the Portara, nearly 6 meters high is the ideal spot to experience the sunset. The Portara a gigantic marble gateway into what was once a long time ago (6th century BC) a temple pledged to Apollo. One of Apollo’s more important tasks was to use his carriage with four horses and drive the Sun across the sky.
Naxos is a very fertile island, something very rare for an island of Cyclades. If you are a keen Naxos island explorer or walker, head approximately 16km southeast of Naxos town to the Tragaia valley region with some charming villages like Chalki and Filoti village on the slopes of Mount Zeus (over 1,000m) is the highest peak on the island and in the Cyclades.
The small quiet villages of Lionas and Moutsouna with its picturesque harbour on the East coast is nice sites for a daily visit, both have tavernas and a good beach.
The ancient temple of Demeter from the 6th century BC located a short walk from Ano Sangri, an inland village. Ancient Kouros statues. Both in the countryside, one in Melanes and the other in Apollonas.
A very attractive activity is to take boat trips around the island and visits the nearby islands.
Many (around 30) beautiful and sandy beaches offer plenty of water sports activities. Here are a few.
Agios Georgios is a popular beach area (resort) with its hotels, apartments, hotels. restaurants. bars, tavernas, and shops and it is only 5 minutes walk to Naxos town.
Agios Prokopios 3.7km from Naxos town, 1.5-2km long sandy beach, one of the best.
Agia Anna 4.7km from Naxos. Great sandy beach.
Plaka a further half a kilometer south of Agia Anna, nice sandy beach, the longest on the island.

How to get here
Like Paros, Naxos is a busy ferry hub of the Cyclades, normal ferries and year on year increasing port calls for high-speed ferries. Naxos is an excellent choice for Island Hoppers. Ferry services from Piraeus and Rafina (Athens) during the whole year, duration 4-6 hours depending on the type of ferry.
During the high season, good ferry connections with Amorgos, Andros, Folegandros, Ios, Donoussa, Koufonissi, Iraklia, Milos, Schinoussa, Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Syros, Tilos, and Tinos. The local ferry Express Skopelitis (Amorgos) runs 6 days per week (2016) between Naxos, Amorgos and the islands of Small Cyclades (Koufonisia, Donoussa, Schinoussa, and Iraklia). Naxos port also has ferry connections to islands outside the Cyclades islands, like (Dodecanese Islands, Kos, Rhodes). Book ferry tickets early especially for the high season (July and August) as accommodation and ferry tickets supply are of high demand.
Allow plenty of time for your return flight from Greece and always plan and arrange an easily accessible final return port of call. Play safe is the name of the game, allow the minimum at least one clear day to spare or more. Ferries can be cancelled due to very strong winds and more.

Naxos Airport (JNX) with daily flights to-from Athens. Flight time approximately 40 minutes. Aegean Airways fly directly to Naxos from some European cities from the middle of May 2018. International flights and European charter flights 2018 use Santorini or Mykonos airport between April – October.
