is located between Ios and Folegandros and is one of the smallest of the Cyclades Islands. Sikinos history equals that of the other Cyclades Islands, from Roman to Byzantine rule and then the Venetians followed by the Turks and so on.
Sikinos was once called ¨Oinoe¨ meaning wine thanks to vines that grew here. Why not visit the Manalis Winery during your stay. A restaurant and special events are organised, you can book a visit online. Winery link here.
Sikinos has sometimes been described as the “untouched” island. It is an ideal destination for you seeking a tranquil escape enjoying that less in life is always more. If you are a hiker, you’re in for a treat, Sikinos presents you with numerous pathways covering many “unknown” areas and some spectacular views of the island. A narrow road runs from Alopronia Port to Kastro/Chora, (less than 4 Kilometres). Two closely situated villages, delightful and picturesque, climbing up the opposing hillsides on either side of a cliff-edged Aegean front. Varied accommodation Hotel, Studios, and Room for rent in Alopronia (port and beach) and in Chora.
Kastro on the eastern side is the larger of the two. There are an ATM machine, basic shops and pleasing al fresco dining in the narrow street tavernas. The distance between the two villages is now occupied by large tavernas with cliff top views and the local bus stop. Chora is merely a suburb these days as it lacks tavernas and shops.
The restaurants in Alopronoia and Kastro serve fresh fish and seafood and do try the oven roasted stuffed lamb, the traditional ¨Ampelofasoula¨ a bean variety of great taste and it is yummy. The local dairy products alongside the olive oil and honey are of supreme quality.
Visit Episkopi, a special monument with a long history. It’s made up of the main temple, the chapel of Agia Anna and abandoned cells. Originally built as a Roman Mausoleum in the 3rd century AD and converted into a Christian temple in the 17th century, with a dome, bell tower, and chancel (an area of a church near the altar).
you will find crystal- clear waters and picturesque shores. You can go by car to the beaches of Livadi, Agios Georgios, and Dialiskari. For hikers follow the pathways to Karas, Maltas, and Santorineika or take a boat/traditional caiques.
Consider making a visit to ¨Mavri Spilia¨(the black cave), only reachable by boat.
