Spain’s oldest golf course

At the foot of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, is Spain’s oldest golf course,

the Club de Golf Corta Atalaya.

It dates back to the late 19th century (1914) when the English technicians working for the Río Tinto Mining Company founded it under the name of the North Lode Golf Club.

The Clubhouse

In 1992 the course was relocated to replanted former mine workings from which the view of the opencast mine that gives the course its name can be seen.

Nearby is the picturesque “Barrio Ingles” (English quarter), residential area with its Victorian architecture, something that is well worth a visit.

One of the course’s greatest attractions are the breathtaking views of the opencast mine with its spectacular display of reds, coppers and ochres.

Corta Atalaya

is located in “La Sierra” (Huelva´s countryside) and commands magnificent views on the Rio Tinto mines as well as on the mountains.

This is a nine-hole course with three par threes, five par fours and one par five. Half of the course is quite flat although two fairways have relatively steep slopes.

Squares of artificial grass are provided to help play! See image

Corta Atalaya Golf course

In 1992 the new Atalaya golf course was built next to the village of Minas de Rio Tinto.

The course is 2,300 metres long, with grassed greens but the fairways are bare earth, reminiscent of the original course used by miners and engineers.
